Ler Devagar
A former printing press turned reading room; strong on art, architecture, and the Portuguese literary new wave.
"The staircases rise through the old presses. You begin to understand that reading, here, is a vertical act."
— from a 2023 interview with the owner
The industrial frames of the old Companhia Nacional Editora presses still rise through the room, now holding thirty thousand titles and a flying bicycle. The staff keeps a hand-written shelf of recommendations near the espresso machine; ask after it.
Why go. The architecture is the point. There is nowhere else in the city where the physical fact of printing presses survives this close to the physical fact of books.
What to buy. The art books — especially the Pedro Costa monographs and the Fundação Serralves catalogues — are the quietly definitive stock in Lisbon.
Nearby. The LX Factory courtyards; the river walk toward Belém; coffee at Landeau next door.
