Livraria Ferin
The oldest working bookshop in Lisbon. Portuguese and French literature, scholarly history, and a serious children's section.
"A hundred and eighty-four years of the same door."
Behind a facade that has not substantially changed since Oscar Wilde was alive, Ferin keeps a selection of French and Portuguese literature that no algorithmic shop can match. Ask at the counter for the back catalogue; much of it is downstairs.
Why go. It survives. In a city that has transformed itself three times since Ferin opened, the shop remains a quiet rebuke to the idea that history must be curated to be preserved.
What to buy. Any of the pocket editions of Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen — if you can’t read Portuguese yet, this is a good reason to start.
Nearby. A Brasileira; the Chiado museum; the long walk down to Cais do Sodré.
