Livraria Sá da Costa
Scholarly and antiquarian. Portuguese history, philosophy, used books, the kind of shop you walk out of carrying a 1942 edition of someone you'd never heard of.
"A shop organised by century, not by genre."
The ceiling is high and the stacks are higher. Three generations of the same family have run this; the arrangement is scholarly rather than retail. You enter looking for one thing and leave with a different thing, which is the point.
Why go. Because the used-book section is one of the great under-discussed collections in Europe.
What to buy. Any Fernando Pessoa first edition they still have (ask); the republished scholarly editions of Portuguese Enlightenment letters.
Nearby. Livraria Bertrand (two doors down, 1732, the oldest in the world); A Brasileira; the Chiado walk.
